April 2015 earthquake

On Saturday 25 April we learned of the latest earthquake in Nepal.

The capital Kathmandu was severely hit. Classed as 7.8 on the Richter scale, the tremor was long, extremely long. It caused thousands of deaths and injuries. The following day another strong tremor was felt, this time measuring 6.7.

As soon as we got the news, we managed to get through on the telephone to Babu Sherpa, head of the Sagarmatha Centre in Kathmandu. The centre caters for fifty disadvantaged children. Luckily, the children and the centre staff are all fine. Everyone took refuge in the new earthquake-proof building, finished last year. The Sagarmatha Centre has access to water and has provisions of food. The neighbourhood residents come to the centre for their supplies of water. Solidarity is well established.

A small section of the enclosure wall of the Sagarmatha Centre collapsed in the quake and some alarming cracks have appeared in the old building. At the time of writing these lines, internet communication is still down.
